Issues from Pam Ippel

HEALTH CARE

Rising health care costs are a burden for families, business owners, workers, and seniors. To address these issues, I endorse the bipartisan health care reform package crafted by the Kansas Health Policy Authority and requested by the legislature.

The legislation would provide preventative care and give all Kansans access to affordable health care insurance.  Also, it would provide health care education.   There already is a way for Kansans to purchase drugs from Canada and overseas, but we need funding to get the word out.  The web site is http://www.i-saverx.net/

EDUCATION

Kansas needs to renew our commitment to education because, as we have seen here in Blue Valley, there’s a strong connection between a quality public education and the economic strength of a community.  The Republican-led legislature has not adequately funded K-12 for many years until the Kansas Supreme Court forced it to.  That three-year plan completed last year.  This session, the legislature will need to address a new plan.  I’ve been endorsed by Kansas Families for Education and the Kansas Teachers and will act in children’s best interest.

Higher education funding from the state has dropped from 49% in 1985 to less then 25% now.   This trend can not continue as Instate tuition costs have grown over 20% a year for many years now.   I will support legislation that will provide relief to the year-after-year college tuition increases that have been way out of line with inflation.

ENERGY

The agenda for the last session instead focused on a one-company, one-industry energy solution, coal power.  We need to work on a broad based solution that would improve business opportunity across all of Kansas and give individuals the incentive to use other energy solutions. Tax incentives to reduce traditional energy usage and net-metering should be enacted.
